Chapter 18

We caught those blasted Wyranth by surprise! The battle was ours today. Tomorrow, we advance and reclaim our lost territory.

Day 26 of the Month of Princesses

24th Year of King Malaky XV's Reign

We left at dusk, but it was completely dark when we reached the place where our commandos had seen the Wyranth vehicle. We'd traveled for a long time off the main road, but followed a trail through the forest. Eventually, we stopped and stood to the side of the worn trail.

"Do we wait for one of them to come down the road and try to jump on their vehicle?" I asked. The prospect didn't sound like the best plan. We probably should have gone over these details hours before, but with no Wyranth around, now was as good as any time to figure out what to do when they did arrive.

"We can do one better than that," First Sergeant Wright said. He motioned to one of his commandos. "Krueger, get over here and open your pack," he said.

Krueger removed his pack from his back. The commandos carried much bigger packs than I did, and I was glad to not have to come up through those ranks and haul such weight. I would have toppled over from exhaustion if I did. Once the pack was open, Krueger produced an ax.

"Ah, I see," Ethan said, grinning. "We make them stop. A much less risky proposition."

Krueger moved over to a nearby tree and chopped at its trunk. His fellow commandos started to tease him about the work he had to do. First Sergeant Wright responded by making them rotate duties hacking at the tree, which brought about groans from the other two commandos. They went to work despite their protests. It wasn't long before the trunk's structure couldn't hold its weight any longer. The bottom of the tree made a crackling noise.

"Everybody back," Corporal Perry said.

We backed away from the tree as the noises grew louder. The tree bent toward the road and, suddenly, the entire weight of it came collapsing down in a crash. It kicked up dust along the road, leaves gently floating through the air.

Despite not being close to the crash, I found myself cringing.

Ethan chuckled at me. "Fearless adventurer, undone by a tree falling."

I wrinkled my nose at him but couldn't actually be mad. A little humor and teasing never hurt anyone, though I would have to get him back later. I laughed along with him.

The tree landed squarely in the middle of the road, just as the commandos wanted. My team circled it to make sure there wouldn't be an easy way for the Wyranth to circumvent it. Determining they needed a slightly better location, the men rolled it over until some bushes and rocks would make it impossible to drive around.

After the tree was in place, we moved to the side of the road into an inconspicuous location where we could maintain cover.

"We should probably get some sleep," I said.
